Yaki Chicken Udon is an easy Japanese Stir Fried Udon Noodle recipe. A delicious and slightly sweet Japanese style yaki udon noodle sauce with just five simple ingredients, with stir fried udon noodles, chicken, cabbage and carrot. This easy dinner can be prepped and cooked all in 20 minutes!
Yaki Udon (Stir-Fried Udon Noodles)
This is such a great weeknight meal because it is so fast and easy to make. The Yaki Udon noodle sauce has 5 simple ingredients and you can make in bulk so you have it ready for the next time you are cooking Yaki Udon.
This recipe uses chicken, cabbage and carrot, but you can really throw in any vegetables and protein you like because these stir fried udon noodles taste so good with just about anything. For this recipe I used leftover chicken for chicken yaki udon, you could also use pork, beef or seafood.
You can use frozen udon noodles, but I prefer the pre-cooked udon noodles found in vacuum packs.
This dinner comes together in three easy steps;
- Prepare the five ingredient yaki udon noodle sauce.
- Stir fry the vegetables and meat.
- Combine the noodles, sauce, vegetables and meat.
What is Yaki Udon?
Yaki Udon is a stir fried Japanese udon noodle dish made with vegetables and protein. It is a quick and easy stir fry with a sauce made from essentially soy sauce and mirin. Yakisoba is also a Japanese noodle dish but made with thinner style noodles.
What is Yaki Udon made from?
Yaki Udon is made using udon noodles which are thick wheat noodles made from wheat flour, water and salt.
Stir Fried Udon Noodles
For the adult version I added some Chilli Achar, which goes perfectly with the sweetness of the sauce, you could also add in fresh chilli or siracha.
This is such a great recipe because:
- it’s a ready in 20 minutes – very little chopping and cutting and mixing and super fast cook time.
- use up leftovers in the fridge – use up any protein and vegetables you have in the fridge like beef mince, pork mince, prawns, capsicum, onion, snow peas and bean shoots.
- minimal ingredients – just a few simple ingredients, but still full of flavour. Perfect for busy midweek meals.
- really, really delicious – the flavours from the sweet sauce, crunchy carrot and cabbage and juicy chicken all match perfectly (with a little chilli for the adults).
Yaki Udon – Chicken Stir Fried Noodle Ingredients
- Japanese udon noodles – udon noodles are thick, chewy wheat noodles made using wheat flour, water and salt. You could easily swap these out for whatever noodles you have on hand even a rice noodle to make this dinner gluten free
- cooked chicken – I used leftover roast chicken to make this dinner really quick, but you can use many different proteins in this noodle dish. Prawns, chicken thigh or chicken breast, minced pork, beef or chicken or even firm tofu. Or you can leave the protein out altogether.
- vegetables – I have kept my stir fry really simple in flavour by just using cabbage and carrot. You could also add onion, garlic, capsicum, spring onion, snow peas, bean shoots and bok choy.
- honey – this recipe includes honey in the sauce, you can replace this with sugar or leave out altogether.
Yaki Udon Leftovers
This makes great leftovers and reheats really well. Store leftovers in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. If you are planning to have for leftovers, then I suggest using raw protein and cook for this dish, if you are using precooked chicken, reheating leftovers may be reheating that cooked chicken too many times.
