Teriyaki Beef

I am all about simple cooking with minimal ingredients and not too much fuss.  This super simple homemade teriyaki beef is perfect, just serve with some steamed rice and whatever veggies your kids and family eat.  Our go-to’s are cucumber, raw carrot, snow peas and sometimes avocado.  This may not be a traditional recipe for Teriyaki Beef, but it’s perfect for busy families looking for a fuss free dinner recipe.

All these ingredients are easily found in your supermarket these days.  Mirin (traditionally a sweet, tangy rice wine or most supermarkets sell mirin seasoning in the same section as soy sauce.  This is a non alcoholic seasoning with similar flavours)

I like to marinate my beef for a short while before cooking, but this step is not essential if you don’t have time.

You could also cook the beef whole as steaks and slice up after cooking if you prefer.

Description

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 clove garlic, finely diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger, finely grated
  • 1/2 cup / 125ml soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup / 125ml mirin
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 700g beef fillet steaks, sliced into strips
  • 1 teaspoon cornflour
  • spring onion, thinly sliced for garnish
  • sesame seeds for garnish
  • steamed rice, to serve

Instructions

In a large bowl combine the garlic, ginger, soy sauce, mirin and sugar.  Add the beef strips and marinate for 30 minutes.  Drain the beef strips, reserving the marinade.

In a small bowl combine the cornflour and 1/3 cup cold water and mix into a smooth paste, set aside.

Cook the beef in batches in a frypan over high heat, will only need 1-2 minutes on each side, reduce heat and continue until cooked to your liking.

While the beef is cooking, place the marinade into a small saucepan and bring to the boil.  Add the cornflour and stir until it returns to the boil.

Remove sauce from heat and pour over beef to serve.

Notes

You can use any quick cooking cut of beef for this recipe; minute steaks, sirloin, tenderloin, strip loin, ribeye, rump or porterhouse.
