SUSHI BENTO BOX
My kids love sushi so I thought what better way to create a healthy lunchbox for kids by using one of their favourite meals.
As you can see in the photo, there are two lunchboxes pictured. This is because in Australia at most public primary schools we have something called Crunch & Sip, which is a set time in the morning for students to ‘refuel’ on vegetables, salad and fruit and ‘rehydrate’ with water.
WHAT TO PUT IN A HEALTHY LUNCHBOX
There are many healthy lunchbox ideas for kids. Sometimes it can almost be overwhelming with what to choose and if you’re getting enough variety and nutrition into your kids.
I generally try to have a ‘main meal’ in the kids lunchboxes as well as fruits, vegetables and snacks to make up the reminder and to create a variety especially if you have fussy kids.
The main food groups are:
- FRUIT – essential vitamins, minerals and fibre for growing bodies.
- VEGETABLES – a great source of fibre and packed with nutrients.
- DAIRY – great for healthy bones and teeth.
- BREADS & GRAINS – high in fibre and carbohydrates which helps children have the energy to learn and play all day.
- MEAT & ALTERNATIVES – high in protein, helping kids to grow and repair their bodies.
I try to serve 3 to 4 food groups in my children’s lunchboxes.
SUSHI BENTO BOX INGREDIENTS
- WATERMELON – loaded with micronutrients like vitamins and minerals that will help your children grow and develop.
- APPLE – good source of fibre.
- GRAPES – I have used green grapes but any grapes can be used.
- GRAPE TOMATOES – you can use cherry tomatoes as an alternative.
- CUCUMBER – crunchy and fresh.
- CARROT – great source of potassium.
- CHEESE – you can use any cheese, I had cheddar cheese at home and used this.
- MINI RITZ CRACKERS – I got these mini crackers to fit into lunchboxes from Coles.
- PRETZELS – I usually add a ‘treat’ food and as this particular lunchbox already has quite a bit of fruit and sweetness, I decided to use a savoury ‘treat’.
- SUSHI – find my recipe here. Alternatively you can use any flavour sushi that your children like or to use up any left overs.

HOW TO MAKE SUSHI BENTO BOX
I started with the Crunch & Sip container and cut up watermelon and apple into bite size pieces.
Next I cut the cucumber and carrot into finger sizes that would fit into this lunchbox. Adding some grapes and grape or cherry tomatoes.
I used mini ritz crackers from Coles, here is a link, and I cut the cheese to match the size of the cracker.
Pretzels which are store bought and used as the ‘treat’ food in this Sushi Bento Box instead of something sweet.
This particular sushi pictured is my Chicken Katsu Sushi but I have added cucumber instead of lettuce. You can use any flavour sushi that suits your kids. Other ideas could be tuna, tofu, avocado or prawn. Sushi can be made with any leaf over meat or vegetables to make your life easier or tailor made to suit your child.
