Gourmet Hotdogs for Kids

Turn your humble hotdog into a substantial dinner for your family with veggie loaded home made tomato sauce, avocado and pickled carrot!

Sausages are a staple in our house and so I came up this fun version of your simple hotdog.  The tomato sauce is also great on pasta or even use as your base for bolognaise.  Make up a heap and freeze portions in zip lock bags.  A trick I have learnt, if you have really fussy eaters, mix the home made sauce with some regular tomato sauce, so your kid’s are at least eating half of the good stuff!  The pickled carrot tastes better after a couple of days, but can be made the afternoon before serving.

serves 6;

6 buns

6 sausages

1 avocado

tomato sauce;

500g cherry tomatoes

1 garlic clove

1 carrot

1 celery stick

½ brown onion

½ small zucchini

20g olive oil

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 tsp dried thyme

pickled carrot;

4 carrots, grated

100ml malt vinegar

100ml white vinegar

130g sugar

½ tsp coriander seeds

½ tsp white peppercorns

THERMOMIX METHOD

Sauce;

Roughly chop and place the tomatoes, garlic, carrot, celery, onion and zucchini into mixing bowl.  Add the oil, tomato paste, thyme, salt and pepper and blend 20 sec / speed 10.  Add ½ cup of water, scrape down sides and cook 25 mins / VAROMA / speed 1 with MC removed and TM basket on lid.

Pickled carrot;

In a saucepan over med-high heat add the vinegars, sugar, coriander and pepper and bring to a simmer, stirring as the sugar dissolves.  Pour over the carrot in a bowl, allow to cool slightly before placing in fridge to cool further.  When ready to serve, strain off excess liquid.

Hotdogs;

BBQ or pan fry the sausages.  Dice the avocado and fill each bun with sausage, avocado, carrot and sauce!

NON THERMOMIX METHOD

Sauce;

Roughly chop and place the tomatoes, garlic, carrot, celery, onion, zucchini, oil, tomato paste, thyme, salt and pepper into a blender or food processor (you may need to do in batches).  Blend until smooth.  Add ½ cup of water and pour all into a large casserole pot with a lid.  Simmer gently over med heat for 25 mins, stirring occasionally.

Pickled carrot;

Hotdogs;

BBQ or pan fry the sausages.  Dice the avocado and fill each bun with sausage, avocado, carrot and sauce!
