HOW TO BUILD A KID FRIENDLY GRAZING CHEESE BOARD
We had friends stay over the long weekend so I made up a cheese board for us Mums and one for the kids. I figured it could just sit out and the kids could graze on it and then restock for the next day, so not having to spend too much time in the kitchen. I like to choose organic cheeses for the kids. I have recently heard fats such as cheese and butter are the ideal foods to start with when going organic. (if you cant afford all organic)
Here are my tips on creating a Kid Friendly Grazing Cheese Board:
CHOOSE YOUR CHEESE
I just went with one variety on this board, organic cheddar. Mozzarella is another nice mild cheese kids love.
I cut this one from Symons Organic Dairy into little bite sized squares.
DIPS
For my grazing boards I usually choose a hummus or pesto, my kids aren’t huge fans of dips so I chose a really smooth, sugar free peanut butter, which is perfect for dipping apple pieces into.
FRUIT & VEGETABLES
Head to your local farmer’s market and grab whatever is in season (and favourites of your kids). I have recently discovered how much of a hit these little baby carrots are with kids, they are a little sweeter too. I added cucumber sticks, plum wedges and apples sliced into rings, I didn’t bother to de-core the apples the kids just ate around the pips.
MEATS
If you’re vegetarian, obviously ignore this. I just chose a mild salami as my daughter loves cured meats. I would even recommend using ham or some leftover sausages if you have them in the fridge.
NUTS
I chose pistachios as they are a favourite in this house, although I think we all prefer them still in the shell, I think it’s more fun peeling each one. Cashews or macadamias would also work well with kids.
CRACKERS
I chose rice crackers and pretzels, although some thinly sliced sourdough would also be great.
OTHER KID FRIENDLY ADDITIONS
Dried fruit such as mango or sultanas. Popcorn. Olives or gherkins. Honeycomb. All these are great for kids.
ARRANGEMENT
There are definitely no rules here, but I like to bunch everything up so choose a smaller sized board or plate rather than an oversized one. Repeating some elements across from each other looks good and try to mix up the shapes. Don’t put all the long skinny things together and then the rounds together, mix them around. Try and mix the colours too, rather than clumping all the green foods near each other. Pre cutting the cheese and meats isn’t so important for an adults board but pretty much essential for little ones.
I think that’s about it!
Such a great dinner when you have people coming to stay!
