PUFF PASTRY XMAS TREES

Ham and cheese puff pastry trees that combine puff pastry’s flaky goodness with rich ham cheese flavours. Folding them into trees and securing with skewers allows you to add a cute little cheese Christmas star on top. Add the stars after cooking so they don’t melt!

This is one of the easiest Christmas bakes you can possibly make this holiday season. They’re only five ingredients and perfect for kids and families at Christmas time.

PUFF PASTRY TREES INGREDIENTS

  • PUFF PASTRY – use puff pastry not shortcrust to get soft and flaky trees with a delicious crunch. I used store bought pastry, there are gluten free options available now.
  • CHEESE – sliced cheese makes it easier to layer and cut, however grated cheese would also work, just use sparingly in a thin layer.
  • HAM – I prefer lag ham, but any sliced ham is fine.
  • MELTED BUTTER – this is optional to add flavour and extra golden on the pastry while cooking. You could replace this with egg, milk or dairy free milk, just brush over before baking.
  • PARSLEY – also this is optional for flavour and to add a little green, you could also use finely diced garlic or leave out altogether.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 61/2 slices of cheese
  • 2 large slices of ham
  • 50g butter, melted
  • chopped parsley to taste
  • extra cheese for stars

Instructions

Pre heat oven to 200C.

Lay out sheet of puff pastry.  Cover with a layer of cheese, then a layer of ham.

Cut into 8-9 even strips, a pizza cutter works well for this.  Fold the pastry starting from the bottom and getting thinner as you get to the top to make a tree shape.  Hold in place with a skewer, leaving a bit extra at the top to hold the stars and lay on a lined tray with baking paper.

Combine the melted butter and parsley and brush each tree to coat well.

Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Using a star cookie cutter, cut small stars from some cheese slices and sit on top of skewers.
